Privacy

What this site collects, what it does not, and what the advertising does.

Last updated 12 October 2026

The short version

You can use every calculator without an account. The calculators run in your browser and the dimensions you type there are not stored. If you choose to create a free account, we keep what you need to sign in and the stair projects you save — nothing else. The other things that involve your data are the contact form and the advertising.

Who operates this site

StepCalc is operated by InfoTilt, Inc., which is the data controller for the purposes of UK and EU data protection law.

The calculators

Every calculation happens in your browser using JavaScript. Your measurements are not transmitted, logged or retained. Close the tab and they are gone.

Accounts and saved projects

An account is optional and only needed to save projects. When you create one we keep your name, email address and a securely hashed password. If you sign in with Google we receive your name, email address and a Google account identifier, and nothing else — no access to your Google data. Each saved project holds the measurements and notes you entered. The project planner sends your measurements to this server to calculate them; for a visitor who is not signed in they are used for that page only and not stored.

To protect the sign-in and sign-up forms from automated abuse we keep short-lived, one-way hashes of failed sign-in attempts and a shortened network address for recent sign-ins. You can delete your account and every saved project at any time from My account.

The contact form

If you send a message we receive the name, email address and message you provide, so that we can reply. We keep it for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry. We do not use it for marketing and we do not pass it to anyone else.

Advertising and cookies

This site is supported by advertising served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve and measure ads, and in some cases to personalise them based on your prior visits to this and other websites.

Your country is detected automatically and the site responds to it. Visitors in the UK, the EEA and Switzerland are shown a consent message before any advertising cookie is set, and advertising and analytics storage stay switched off until that message is answered. Visitors in California and the other US states with privacy laws are shown an opt-out message instead. Either choice can be changed at any time using the Privacy settings link at the foot of every page.

Ads are not shown on this page, on the terms page or on the contact form.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which calculators get used, so we know what to build next. It sets cookies and records a truncated IP address. It does not tell us who you are.

Your rights

If you are in the UK or EEA you have rights of access, correction, erasure and objection in respect of personal data we hold about you. You can delete your account and saved projects yourself from My account; for anything else, including a message sent through the contact form, write to the postal or email address above and we will deal with it.
